Partner Projects
The Great Lakes Protection Fund
In 1989, the Governors formed the Great Lakes Protection Fund. As the nation's first multi-State, not-for-profit, environmental endowment, the Fund issues grants to support regional collaborative efforts focusing on enhancing the health of the Great Lakes ecosystem. The member States also receive Fund monies through State shares based on their original contribution to the Fund. View Site »

Great Lakes Biomass State Regional Partnership
The Council administered the Great Lakes Biomass State Regional Partnership (GLBSRP) under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) from 1983-2009. Great Lakes Water Quality Initiative
In 1994, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued the first basin-wide water quality guidelines for the Great Lakes region. The Council assisted the Great Lakes States in coordinating new State water quality regulations consistent with these guidelines. More »
Spill Protection Initiative
The Spill Protection Initiative was established in 1992 as a partnership between the Great Lakes States and five major oil companies (Amoco, BP America, Marathon, Mobil, and Sun Oil) to better prevent and respond to oil spills. More »
Workforce Quality Initiative
The Great Lakes Governors want to ensure that emerging, existing, and transitional workers in their States have the skills necessary to compete and thrive in today’s economic marketplace, while maintaining the region’s competitive edge. In 1997, as part of the Workforce Quality Initiative, they announced the creation of the Great Lakes Guarantee--a portable, regional endorsement of State or national industry skill standards. More »
The Pioneering Partners Foundation
The Pioneering Partners Foundation, created in 1992, brings teachers together who have successfully employed technology in the classroom and provides them with grant funding, specialized training, and on-going support to spread their technology-based innovations to their peers and the region’s students.
