Spill Protection Initiative
Overview
The Spill Protection Initiative was established in 1992 as a partnership
between the Great Lakes states and five major oil companies (Amoco,
BP America, Marathon, Mobil, and Sun Oil) to identify means to better
prevent and respond to oil spills. The Great Lakes Commission’s
Emergency Preparedness Task Force currently is implementing recommendations
from a 1994 Initiative report on enhancing spill response and prevention
