Great Lakes Workforce Quality Initiative

Mission and Objective

The Great Lakes Governors want to ensure that people in their states have the skills necessary to compete and thrive in today’s economic marketplace. They also want to ensure that current and future workers develop the skills necessary to create and use the technology that maintains the region’s competitiveness. The objective is to create the Great Lakes Guarantee, a portable, regional endorsement of skill certification that supports systems based upon state or national industry skill standards.

The Great Lakes Guarantee is a long-term regional commitment that the Great Lakes Governors have made to develop an excellent, front-line workforce based on the use of skill standards. The Guarantee will declare that a worker’s skills sanctioned in one Great Lakes state are recognized in all Great Lakes states. By recognizing and validating skills regardless of where they are acquired, the Guarantee fosters lifelong learning critical to the region’s competitiveness and to the employability of the region’s workers.
